Aidan O'Rourke - On Mattie and the new studio:
"I’ve worked with Mattie in recording studios for over 15 years and I've witness him develop not only as meticulous recording engineer but as an astute and nurturing record producer.
At Caribou Recordings Mattie has finally found the right home to allow his production aesthetic to evolve. I’m proud to be associated with this new studio and I’m excited to hear the results from Caribou Recordings over the next few years.
Kit Downs - "I love playing at Mattie's place - there is a very positive and relaxing atmosphere there that makes it possible to set up quick and get your ideas down and recorded straight away. Mattie is a great engineer and I'd recommend the space to anyone."
Rachel Newton – On Recording and Mixing a full album:
“This was my third time working with Mattie on an album so I knew how great he was to work with, but working at Caribou was really special. The studio is in a beautiful location with a view that is ever changing and has enough space to be creative and focused. Mattie and I produced my latest record “Here's My Heart Come Take It” together at Caribou. We had a week just the two of us in the studio where we laid down harps, keys and drums, all the while Mattie trusting me to come up with the basic ideas for us both to build on. It was a very exciting and creative time, with ideas moving in all different directions. Mattie allowed me the space to do that with just the right amount of guidance. We were joined by Lauren MacColl and Michael Owers in the second week where they added their parts to the record. It was a great team and a great atmosphere in the studio. In the mixing process, Mattie took the lead but was also very patient with my requests and changes! He would go out of his way to make sure I was happy with the final mix. I can't recommend Mattie and Caribou highly enough. A wonderful place to record an album!”
Luke Plumb – On eMixing service:
“Being able to confidently offer clients an international world class level mix and master option is a great advantage for my projects based in Australia. Caribou Recording has delivered outstanding results on a wide range of genre based recordings, from ambient electronica through traditional material to folk pop. A musician himself, Mattie understands the music he is working on and is a valued and reliable point of view regarding creative decisions in the mix process.”
Fraser Fifield – On Mixing
“Top quality few days finishing my Mumbai recordings with Mattie – overdubbing and mixing, all sounding great!”
Hamish MacLeod (Inyal) – On Caribou Live
“The quality of the content Caribou Live produce is outstanding. Mattie and Somhairle provide exceptional creative services in a relaxed atmosphere that belies the level of skill and dedication on offer. The live videos they created for us were enormously beneficial and significantly bolstered the online presence of the band. Caribou Live represents a unique and highly effective service that I would recommend to anyone seeking to promote their work.”

My room sounds great for Drums! I have all the industry standard mics/pre-amps and compressors to get the sound you're looking for. From big and brash to tight and punchy and everything in between. My usual micing technique employs close mics and a variety of room mics. So when you get to mixing you can choose what works best for your track. Or if you want me to try something specific, let's do it! I'm up for anything!
I can also work in any sample rate you choose up 192 khz. See a full list of instruments and equipment over on the "equipment" page.
Man and machine can work equally well, depending on the production and artistic intent of the writers and performers. I have a wide variety of acoustic drums, percussion instruments, drum programming machines and tools at my disposal for any artists desire.
Communication is key in this situation, where the artist/producers aren't there when the tracking is being done. So please include as much information about what you are looking for to make sure you get what you want. facetime, skype and ichat are all available and very useful too!
All I need from you is an mp3 of your track and I'll play to that. I then make a quick reference of what I've done and send that for your approval. Once approved, I can upload the multi-tracks as full res.wav's for you to download and mix into your production.
More and more these days the majority of mixing I do on my own. most times artist can't afford the time to be with me while I work. My typical method now sees me mix a track and then immediately send a reference mp3 to the artist where ever they are, be it Scotland, England, Canada or Australia. The artist or producer can then listen and respond with any changes they may want or need. I make those changes and send another reference, until everyone is happy. I use a very efficient and simple online file sharing service, where you can upload your multi-tracks for me to download and import into my system. when these mixes are fully approved I put them on a pen drive and send them to the mastering studio of your choice.
Again communication about what kind of mix your looking for is key here. and if you have any reference material you want me to listen to as a guide, I'm more than happy to do so. I want you to get your artistic vision realised, that's my job! :-)
The price/track includes full stems of the mix you have approved. i.e every individual element separated out going through whatever analogue or digital equipment i used in the mix. So that if you play all the stems together the mix is exactly the same as the stereo mix. This is very useful for re-mixers, syncing for films or for changes to be made to the mix during mastering. Also included will be a vocal out mix for karaoke and syncing purposes.
